Fake "Veterans Savings Program" Postcards Are Phishing for Your SSN and Bank Details
Scammers are mailing postcards to veterans — and their spouses — claiming they might qualify for extra monthly benefits through a "Veterans Savings Program." There is no such program. To seem credible, the postcard may list the state you live in and reference real VA benefits like CHAMPVA or TRICARE For Life. The message urges you to call right away or risk losing out.
The rush is the tell. Legitimate VA communications will not pressure you to act immediately or ask for sensitive details over the phone. The goal of the call is to get you to share your Social Security number or bank account information. If a postcard like this arrives, do not respond or call the number on it. If you have a benefits question, contact the VA yourself at 1-800-827-1000 — a number you look up yourself, not the one printed on the card.
