Debt Relief Scammers Target Military With Fake "Military Debt Forgiveness" Programs

Military & Veterans

Debt relief scammers call military members out of the blue, using official-sounding names to suggest ties to USAA, Navy Federal, or credit bureaus. They offer to enroll you in "exclusive" military debt forgiveness programs that do not exist — after you pay an upfront fee. It is illegal for any debt relief company to charge you before they help.

Some scammers pressure you to pay them instead of your real creditors. Missing payments on your real debt can lower your credit score, increase what you owe, and even affect your security clearance.

What to look for

  • Unexpected calls from debt relief companies using military-sounding names or claiming ties to USAA, Navy Federal, or credit bureaus
  • Offers to enroll you in "exclusive" military debt forgiveness or veteran debt relief programs
  • Upfront fee requirements before any debts are settled — this is illegal
  • Pressure to stop paying your real creditors and pay the debt relief company instead

What to do

Contact your lender directly about repayment options, or find free financial counseling through an on-base personal financial manager (active duty) or the VA (veterans).
